Television
The television was invented in 1884, and became commercially available during the 20s, however, it wasn't until the 1950s until the TV became cheap enough for the majority of the population, the middle class, could afford it. This new technology was revolutionary in the entertainment business, adding a new sense that was missing from the older radio, sight. The radio could broadcast audio, the tv, allowed a more immersive experience. The combination of audio and vision, made the consumer feel more engaged in the action. This allowed a variety of programs to broadcast. This benefitted the movie industry, no longer did you have to go the cinema to watch movies, but now you could watch movies at home on your television. It was the favourite leisure activity for families.TV also gave more control to the audience, it was easier to identify the program they were watching. In the 30s and 40s, few people owned a TV ,however, the 50s changed this and by the end of it, 90% of Americans owned one.

Radio
However, the radio still had a market. The radio was technology that the audience was used to, so getting a TV wouldn't have been logical because if they couldn't use it there wasn't a point in buying one. The radio was also much cheaper, and companies were still broadcasting quality programs. The radio was more eco-friendly, as television used up more electricity. The radio was more portable. Also, the radio was better for the economy, because you had to look nice to get a job on TV.
